Uber to add "Taxi by Meter" service

Uber today (5th) announced that it will work with HKTaxi to add "Taxi by Meter" trip service starting from 9th of this month, allowing Uber users to connect to more than 10,000 registered cab drivers in HKTaxi App directly from the application (App), and at the same time provide taxi fare according to the meter to enhance the success rate of the trip booking. The company's general manager for Hong Kong, Mr. Timothy Chung, said that after the connection of the two apps, the business scope can be extended to about 80% of the cab drivers in Hong Kong.

Uber is buying local company HKTaxi in 2021, and Chung says cab drivers who have registered with HKTaxi will be able to receive delivery orders directly from Uber, without having to register with Uber. Chung said the biggest difference between Uber and HKTaxi is that HKTaxi uses a "scramble" system, which requires drivers to compete for orders, while Uber uses a "dispatch" system, which sends out the most suitable, and theoretically the cheapest, drivers to take orders.

The new service does not require users to pay extra fees, and users can pay directly in the app or directly to the driver in cash.Uber said Hong Kong has close cooperation with other regions such as Taiwan, Japan and Korea, and will launch airport travel and other related preferential strategies to promote tourist travel in the future.
