Hong Kong's start-up company launches online bus platform

With the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day celebrations taking place from next Friday to October 2, it is expected that some people will return home after a night of nightclubbing and drinking. Hong Kong's start-up company has launched an online bus platform "Hitchhiking Bird" to pick up people returning home at night. The Hong Kong Non-Franchised Bus Association and the platform are working together to conduct a trial run at Lan Kwai Fong in Central tonight (22nd), but it didn't go well. Three coaches parked at Wellington Street waiting for passengers to get on the buses were driven away by the police several times, and finally were allowed to wait for passengers to get on the buses only after negotiation. The founder of the platform, Yuen Lok-tso, said that he would strengthen coordination with the police and the Transport Department, and identify more suitable places for picking up and dropping off passengers.

"Hitchhiking Birds and the Hong Kong Non-Franchised Bus Association (HKNFA) organized a trial run in Lan Kwai Fong today, with three coaches simulating the return of people to different parts of the urban area after leisure activities, with the coaches terminating in Mong Kok, Tsim Sha Tsui and Tseung Kwan O via North Point. Legislative Councillor Yiu Pak-leung, Chairman of the Travel Industry Council Mrs. Laura Tsui and Council Member Mr. Chui Ting-pong were also present to show their support.

However, the "Hitchhiking Birds" were not in a good position. When the three coaches were parked at Wellington Street, they were repeatedly evicted by the police officers who were on the spot to maintain traffic order, and finally they were allowed to stay and wait for the passengers to board the coaches after negotiation.

The founder of the platform, Mr. Yuen Lok-tso, said that he will strengthen the coordination with the police and the Transport Department, and identify more suitable places for picking up and dropping off passengers. He added that "Hitchhiker" will continue to be piloted in Lan Kwai Fong on weekends, and people can download the app to book a free bus home. Each bus can carry 24 to 27 people, and the route and frequency can be changed flexibly depending on the booking situation.
