Yan Xiaotian: A Grateful Person in Society

Yan Xiaotian and Wang Yajun were involved in illegal capture and trafficking of wildlife in the past, including 14 Eurasian hobby falcons, which are second-class protected animals, and two other falcon species. They were sentenced to 10 and a half years in prison after the first and second trials. Although the defendants appealed the decision, their appeals were rejected by the higher court.

After three reductions in sentence, Yan Xiaotian served 8 years and 10 months in prison and was released on Saturday. In front of his hometown, a banner was pulled up with the words "Welcome Yan Xiaotian back home safely." His family and friends from out of town rushed to reunite with him and prepared various delicacies such as fish and meat, as well as a large pot of rice. Around 11 o'clock in the afternoon, Yan Xiaotian's father led the family to thank the neighbors at the door. Yan Xiaotian himself appeared to express his gratitude to everyone for their support over the years, saying that he would become a grateful person in society and deeply bowed to everyone.

Looking to the future, Yan Xiaotian stated that he would first go to the cemetery to pay respects to his late grandmother, and then he would strive to adapt to society while considering entrepreneurship and choosing what project to pursue.

It is worth mentioning that the judgment of this case caused a lot of controversy at the time, with many people believing that the court's punishment was too severe. Sun Jiang, director of the Animal Protection Law Research Center at Northwest University of Political Science and Law, believes that in cases like this, we should not only focus on harsh punishments but also consider adding fines and property confiscation as property penalties, and use these assets to restore the legal interests of wildlife.

Zhang Liyong, president of the Henan Provincial Higher People's Court, believes that this "university student bird hunting case" is actually a vivid "legal education lesson," revealing the lack of awareness of wildlife protection and the thin awareness of the law among many people. This judgment also serves as a warning to potential poachers and enhances public awareness of wildlife protection.

In summary, Yan Xiaotian is finally released after serving his sentence and expresses gratitude to his family and friends. He vows to be a grateful person in society and considers entrepreneurship. It is worth mentioning that this case sparked controversy over the sentencing by the court, suggesting that for such crimes, consideration should be given to adding property penalties and using them to restore the legal interests of wildlife. This case also serves as a reminder of the importance of public awareness of wildlife protection.
